Model Beware And Be Aware

Before you think about photography for modeling please consider carefully. Many so called "agencies" or "talent scouts" will shower you with compliments and promises of fame and fortune. Often the only fortune that reveals itself is the fortune you spend to be represented by these spin-doctors. That is not to say that there are not legitimate agencies out there. Look for agencies that have been around for a while and that have a well-established track record. Look for honesty, not compliments. Be especially wary of huge casting calls from out-of-town "agencies." Ask lots of questions, check with consumer protection agencies, and don't sign anything on impulse.

Some agencies will insist that you use their chosen photographer, or they will charge you an excessive amount of money to make comps for photos not taken by their photographer. This should send up some red flags. If they insist on having their photographer shoot you, insist on seeing his/her work, ask about credentials, and know exactly what you will be getting and when. Ask for written guarantees.

If you are shopping for a photographer, consider qualifications over cost. Many photographers who say they shoot models may not know the difference between portrait and model photography. If a photographer wants to shoot you only in front of a studio background, say "thank you, goodbye." Your comp should consist mostly of natural poses and environmental settings, and one high-fashion/couture look.

Why choose me as your photographer?

  • Quality: There are no guarantees that you will be a successful model, even if you are represented by a good agency. I can however guarantee you a variety of high-quality images that will highlight your look in the best manner possible thereby increasing your chances of success.
  • Experience: I have worked closely with several agencies in St. Louis and am well aware of the looks you need in order to attain representation and the jobs that come with it. I shot fashion every week for 6 years at Ladue News, often times working with models who had little to no experience. Any photographer can shoot Tyra Banks and she would still look pretty good, but it takes know-how to work with "green models." I can help you with poses and use lighting and camera angles to make you look your best.
  • Trust: I have a well-established reputation as a photographer, which I maintain by meeting and exceeding the expectations of my clients.
  • Ways and Means: I have at my disposal a truly unique and amazing studio space—a circa 1930 police station that has been converted into an art gallery and event venue. It's art deco architectural features, ever-changing art displays, nearby park, and the surrounding historic neighborhood offer limitless possibilities for interesting environments.
